Tip of the Week

Writers hate to write.

Just let that statement sink in for a moment.

Whether it is true or not, sometimes writers act that way. We procrastinate, often blaming other tasks for why we cannot write or rely on the old stanby "I'm just not inspired enough to write."

"Effective writers" move past these obstacles and press on to produce meaningful and satisfying pieces.

This week's journal, as well as next week's, will be dedicated to tips that will help us press on.

1. Don't count on inspiration. Writers write whether they feel like it or not. So, set a time to write. It doesn't have to be everyday, but it should be often enough that you don't lose momentum in your story. I, personally, write regularly 4-5 days a week but limit myself to 6. I do this because I find my creativity gets worn out if I write everyday. Find a schedule that works for you and stick to it.

2. Set a goal. Sit down and don't get up until you have written a specific amount of material. For some people, that is a paragraph. For others that is a chapter. Still others can write 10 pages at a time. Your goal depends on what kind of writer you are; know your limits and work within them.

3. Set a deadline. Many times writers don't seriously write unless a deadline is looming. If you are that type, set a deadline. Perhaps you can commit to a friend or family member that you will let them read your piece within a certain timeframe.

4. Practice time management. While school work, jobs, and leisure time are important (very important; don't neglect them ;)), if you really want to be an "effective writer," you have to make time to write. Start a schedule and stick to it.

5. Expect Writer's Block. Every once in a while, you're going to come upon a time where you just can't write. Plan for it and develop a way to overcome the block. You can find some help in our Writer's Block tip

6. Recognize Avoidance mechanisms for what they are. Let's face it. Some times we don't have a good reason for not wanting to write--we just don't want to. So we make up all sorts of excuses. See these excuses for what they are, pick up your pen, and write.

Here's hoping that we all get off our butts and start writing. Tune in next week for more. :XD:

LOL! Yes, it's so true. I read that first sentence and thought "ooooooh no. This is gonna be directed at me." Most of the time, I write like my hair's on fire (if I've got five spare seconds, I'm at my computer or scribbling on the closest notepad), but there are all those lovely nights where I sit and listen to my radio and pretend that my story doesn't exist...

With that said... dA is the ultimate procrastination tool no longer. Now that I've been humbled, I think I shall log off and go back to writing. Ciao.

Last time I threatened to not finish a story, my friend retorted with, "okay, I'll tie you to a chair until you change your mind." I swear, you're all in league. It's all just a plot against me! :paranoid:

I'm guilty of that  I'm also guilty of using the thesaurus and picking words without really knowing what they mean and how well they coincide with other words. Man I feel silly after I read some of my older works

I usually try my best to get motivated, but that's my problem. I got little XD

Also, I'll sent you a note :)

Motivation is hard. Sometimes just just have to do it without motivation. Just sit yourself down and go--even if it's just a paragraph or revising something you've already written.

I've been doing that lately with my own personal writings. I've revised the same three paragraphs at least six times but yea, even though I lack the motivation, the inspiration is starting to flow. Eventually motivation will soon follow. So far I got nearly 20 pages :) It's a personal one though, Garry and I's anniversary is coming up and I've been doing a lot of focusing on that.

(Before anyone thinks dirty, it's a romantic story, nothing nasty XP )
